WOTCHER LADS
*wrote this last night and it didn’t send. So pretend you’re reading this last night. Unless you live in NYC, in which case make sure to remember that it is in fact today, and that we play in your city this very eve.*
Writing to you from Scottsville, VA, where we staying at my grandfather’s farmhouse. Mak Lily Levi are in the kitchen making dinner, and I am conveniently right just this minute busy writing the much sought-after and lode-bearing newsletter.
It’s beautiful here. We spent the afternoon floating and finding cool rocks in the James River, which is so low and lazy right now. We found a tube in the barn that looks like a tractor tire inner tube and floated around on it. Cleo was about as happy as a dog can be. She figured out how to blow bubbles underwater. Unreal.
Tour fucking rocks. So far it has been just road trip plus a show, but we’re sliding into something like a rhythm, 3 days in. We played at the Blue Strawberry on Sunday night in St. Louis, and a whollee bunch of Lily’s family and friends came. The venue felt great - they usually do more jazz and blues kinds of things, but the sound was excellent. It was also our first show in many months and it just felt good, to play for loved ones and for each other. We learned Levi’s new song called The Wind, and it bangs in a completely different way from all our other stuff. It’s nice to have another voice in the mix.
Tonight is Dürty Nelly’s in Charlottesville, which has been around forever and is many people’s favorite bar, apparently. We can play for up to 3 hours, if we’re able, so we’re gonna be busting out some old covers. Then we’re up early tomorrow to get to NYC in time for the next show tomorrow night.
This (tour) is definitely one of those things that will be over before I know it, like so many good things. So the challenge is to stay present, and to pay attention, and try to connect as much as I can. All the logistical pieces and moving parts are always jostling for our attention, especially when something goes wrong. But it (tour) is also just such a good thing; there’s so much joy that we can channel on the road and at shows. People are happy for us, and I’m happy for us. Happy we made it happen, and grateful to everyone that has helped us.
Also Mak released a song on Saturday! it’s called Insufferable, and it bangs. (I linked the Spotify; If you have Apple Music I don’t know what to tell you.) We’re playing it on tour, so if you’re coming to show probably it’s a good idea to stream. ANDDD Lily, alongside gf Charlotte, wrote and recorded a parody of Insufferable called Weird and Freaky. And you, friends, can listen to it right here. If you were at the St. Louis show, you heard it as our encore song. Turns out marching-band-rockstar-Lily can also do runs. unREAL.
Ok we’re in a rush to get to Dürty Nelly’s so that’s all I got. Some pictures below.
Much love.
