It’s Jamie from Widemouth. I’m sitting in Brothers K, the coffee shop in Evanston that Mak and I go to upwards of four times a week. The new Widemouth song, Rubber Boots, came out last night wwoOOOO! Stream here. It’s definitely our spookiest song, despite being largely just a love song. It’s about (or came out of) the trip to Maine that Mak and I took last summer that sort of kicked off the whole dating thing. There was something a little otherworldly, or spiritual, about the whole thing. It felt like we had been plunged into something that had already existed for a long time, and there’s something chilling about that. How much is not really in our control, I guess.
Sam Genualdi did a phenomenal job with the production (huge surprise). He came up with the guitar part at the end that now feels essential, and had a feathery touch with the little spooky nuggets throughout. And my grandma, Esther Garcia Eder, did the cover art, again. Her art can be found here.
Full EP comes out on 11/22. Release show is at SPACE, on 12/6. Tickets here.
It’s Halloween, which is a complicated holiday for me in terms of how much I like it. I haven’t had a really awesome Halloween since I was maybe 9 or 10? I dressed up as a ninja for several years in a row in elementary school, and would wear the outfit around the house. After those years, though, it was mostly just not being invited to parties and trying to figure out how to come up with a costume that didn’t seem like I was trying too hard. Then college, it was a lot of drinking. Last year was fun - Mak and I dressed up as our Hydroflasks. The issue, I think, for me, is just that there’s no real feeling that I associate with Halloween, in the way that I do on Thanksgiving or especially Christmas. The feeling for a while was “holy shit I’m gonna get to eat so much candy,” and now it’s “haha nice costume.” It’s definitely one of those holidays that most of the magic, structurally speaking, is reserved for children.
This year is looking promising, though. We have a show tonight, and we’re going as an unlikely lot of chums hailing from Wydemæthe. I am Ormr, Champion of the Skies (a dragon), Levi is BroadSteed, Cleric’s Bane (a horse), Mak is Glanydyr, Townsfolk’s Reprieve (a knight), and Lily is King Missourious, His Doctrine Made Crystalline (a king).
Also, Levi and his very tall friend Peter apparently went to class today in full costume. Peter went as Judge Holden from Blood Meridian, and Levi, of course, was BroadSteed, Cleric’s Bane.
Maybe there’s some magic left for us young adults after all.
If you’re free tonight and in Evanston, we’re playing at 919 Foster at 7pm. No cover, but wear a costume. DON’T tell the fire department.
Anon! Fare thee well.
Ormr, Champion of the Skies
